Updating airport firmware

Apple today released a new Air Port Base Station Firmware Update for the Airport Express, Air Port Extreme, and Air Port Time Capsule.

According to Apple, the new 7.8.1 update "improves the security of your base station" and is recommend for all Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Stations.

“The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourage users and administrators to review the Apple security page for Air Port Base Station Firmware Update 7.8.1 and apply the necessary updates.”Apple’s own description of this update is couched in general terms, just saying that version 7.8.1 “improves the security of your base station.” The company’s support website has instructions on how to install this firmware update.

Apple has released a firmware update for Air Port Extreme and Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac Wi-Fi that’s aimed at improving security.

Apple is planning on releasing updates for the cancelled Air Port lineup of routers for the next four years or so, after initially promising updates for five years after the discontinuation.

So it’s likely this won’t be the last firmware update we see for the lineup.

Three denial of service issues were addressed in the patch, two of which could be triggered remotely through faulty code.

The third involved a similar denial of service attack carried out by a bad actor in a privileged position.

Apple promised to continue offering service and parts for Air Port Base stations for the next five years, which includes firmware updates to address security issues.The release addresses three denial-of-service vulnerabilities, an out-of-bounds read issue that could allow an attacker to leak memory, and a bug where not all user data was deleted after a base station factory reset.You must update your Air Port base station using Air Port Utility on your Mac or an i OS device with Apple’s Air Port Utility app installed.Apple today released Air Port Base Station Firmware Update 7.9.1 for Air Port Extreme and Air Port Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac support.According to a support document, the update addresses a number of security issues on the affected models.
